We are currently seeking an experienced Rail Systems Engineer to join our team in Melbourne.
About the Role:
Reporting into the O&M technical leadership team, this role shapes how a complex new rail system will operate and perform. You’ll turn operational intent into requirements, guide design development, and ensure the system is safe, reliable and deliverable throughout testing, integration and into trial operations. In this role, you will:
- Develop and maintain the Concept of Operations (ConOps) and define strategies for operations, degraded modes, OCC/BCC functions and remote driving.
- Translate ConOps into clear O&M requirements and ensure they are embedded across rail systems design.
- Participate in technical workshops and provide O&M input to design, systems engineering and integration teams.
- Review rail systems specifications and designs to ensure safety, reliability, operability and maintainability.
- Assess station, yard, workshop and depot designs from an operational perspective.
- Contribute to technical interface reviews and monitor design changes that may impact performance or O&M needs.
- Review hazard analyses (PHA, SHL, SSHI, SSHA, FMEA) and support system safety activities.
- Review RAM deliverables, including spares, tools, commissioning strategies and operator constraints.
- Provide input into human factors, control room layouts and operational workstations.
- Support the development of training materials, asset handover strategies and warranty requirements.
- Contribute to system integration test cases, trial operations scenarios and operational readiness processes.
- Support risk management, safety processes and O&M management of change.
- Contribute to Standard Operating Procedures and develop Life Cycle Cost (LCC) assumptions through design.
- Provide specialist technical guidance across O&M and systems engineering functions.
Profile
You’re an experienced rail systems professional with a strong background in the design, delivery and operation of complex rail or tunnel-based transport systems. You bring sound engineering judgement, a collaborative approach, and the ability to influence technical outcomes across a multi-disciplinary environment. You will have:
- A Master’s degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
- 7–10 years’ experience in railway tunnel operations and maintenance, including tunnel system definition, design, manufacturing, and test & commissioning.
- Strong communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical, operational and external partners.
- Experience using project management tools and methods, with a track record of delivering complex systems projects to time and quality.
- Certification or training in relevant rail or systems engineering technologies (preferred).
