We are currently seeking an experienced Stabling Yard Engineer to join our team in Melbourne.
About the Role:
As the Stabling Yard Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the design and operation of a major rail stabling and maintenance facility meets the needs of future operations, maximising safety, reliability, and operational efficiency while optimising life cycle costs. You will work closely with designers, operations, and maintenance teams to translate operational requirements into practical, safe, and effective design solutions. Key responsibilities include:
- Maintain the O&M Concept of Operations for the stabling yard, ensuring operational and maintenance needs are fully captured and translated into design requirements.
- Support the development of the stabling yard layout to enable safe and efficient rolling stock movements, seamless integration with the mainline, and minimal operational risk.
- Specify maintenance facilities to support heavy and light rolling stock maintenance, cleaning, maintenance vehicle operations, and spare management.
- Define and communicate operational and control centre requirements, including facility layout and fitout to meet functional needs.
- Review, provide input, and challenge designs related to security, automatic train operation, depot protection systems, and reliability targets.
- Support depot equipment specifications and ensure designs accommodate the latest predictive maintenance technologies.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritise design improvements based on operational requirements and strategic objectives.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices in rail operations and maintenance.
- Actively participate in design reviews, operator-led processes, and quality assurance checks.
- Maintain documentation of assets, processes, and procedures; support audits, inspections, and testing.
- Monitor system performance, identify opportunities for optimisation, and provide technical guidance within your area of expertise.
Profile
About You:
You are an experienced rail engineer with a strong background in stabling yard design, construction, and maintenance. You bring technical expertise, operational insight, and a collaborative mindset to ensure that stabling yard facilities are safe, efficient, and future-ready. You have a proven ability to work across teams and with external stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes on complex rail projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 7–10 years’ experience in stabling yard design, construction, test & commissioning, and maintenance, including depot equipment, special tools, and predictive maintenance technologies.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Experience with project management methodologies and tools, with a track record of delivering complex system projects on time and within budget is a plus.
